Default Magnet Lite - 4 Mb ADSL 2+

Just got Magnet installed without the TV service, as I had NTL instead. Did the test, was expecting 4mb or just below.

Download: 1.48mb
Upload: 422KB

I'm a bit dissapointed.
Also pinged www.boards.ie - At home with eircom 2meg line I get 40ms on average.
Pinging www.boards.ie [82.195.136.250] with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 82.195.136.250: bytes=32 time=53ms TTL=56
Reply from 82.195.136.250: bytes=32 time=50ms TTL=56
Reply from 82.195.136.250: bytes=32 time=51ms TTL=56
Reply from 82.195.136.250: bytes=32 time=54ms TTL=56

Ping statistics for 82.195.136.250:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 50ms, Maximum = 54ms, Average = 52ms

Overall I'm not so happy. I expect this to improve. I'm located in inchicore Dublin.

They fixed my phone there today and now my upload is down to about 380kb with the download still around the same, ping is also same. I got on to them on the phone and told them that I get more with my Eircom on the same test at home(galway)... they are looking into it! I'm on to the phone a good bit with them now. They seem nice but I'd prefer not to be calling them at all.

I have got the triple play in the last week and it is fine so far. The speed tests vary depending on what test I use. On irishisptest, I am getting nearly 3 mbps download and 700kbps upload. Pretty good. The tv went down for an hour the other day but they were very nice on the phone and it got sorted. Very good customer service. I wonder how long it will last. I had IBB ripwave a few months ago and it was a disaster.

Lucan Exchange is up off the old lucan rd (not far from woodies) isn't it. I'm in Lucan as well, probaby about the same distance away, if the eircom cables follow a direct street route from the exchange into my estate and house, so very interested in your experience, as getting the Magnet TV is high on my list. What kind of problems were you having with it.

BTW 1-2 weeks ago a contractor working on behalf of Smart Telecom was doing some street on the junction down to where I think the exchange is.

Question anyone got magnet lite?

Coming to my area in april and i'm seriously considering it. Wondering if anyone here recommends it or has problems with it? Seems like a great deal. If I sign up now I get 1st month free then 2nd and 3rd month for €28. Then €38pm thererafter

Cheers

Well they might be new but so far so good for me.

Magnet steals IBB's girlfriend and then drinks it's beer while laughing and doing the nasty.

my problems with the phone have re-imerged... still getting echo. I'm a gamer too, play unreal with the irish server, my ping is around 50-60 which is crap but not too bad. I was expecting 20-35!!

... breach of contract... if they don't hurry on and fix their mess for me it may be! - I don't have the TV part, have heard it is touch and go with it at the moment.

I'm getting an operations mgr to look at the line to see what the problem is this week sometime

Yes, you need to switch back to eircom (no charge). This will take a couple of weeks. And then, you sign up with magnet and they arrange to have your line switched at the exchange. Magnet send you the modems and you wait for your phone to get cut off and then you are ready to set up your magnet service. Remember that switching to magnet involves changing your phone number.

Crap service .... I've contacted Magnet customer services last week about my very slow internet connection ( 119 Kbps at the moment and I signed up for the 8MG connection ) and still nothing ...

I will have to cancel that contract ... very poor service

Default magnet networks are crap

A PERSONAL EXPERIENCE OF LIFE WITH MAGNET NETWORKS

Well it’s another evening sitting in; weather is bad, so looking forward to my favourite television programmes. What will we watch? maybe some digital TV? Or will we surf the net on my laptop or maybe we’ll make a phone call to a friend?

Lets switch on the TV and watch one of the 40 odd digital channels we have with Magnet, lets watch uktv gold some old re-runs of only fools and horses, they’re always good for a laugh or maybe the fashion channel or maybe the kids can watch cartoon network?

So we settle down and wait, and wait, and wait for the picture to settle enough so we can understand what they are saying and we wait, maybe it will settle in a while. Its only temporary I tell my family, it will settle.

No, that’s no use; let’s go back to our old reliable NTL cable TV, at least it doesn’t go off every two minutes.

Next we might, surf the net, do some internet shopping, check our e-mails, maybe book a flight.
So we turn on the laptop, and wait, and wait, and wait, no signal? Okay we try and connect and it tells us that it’s connected to the router? But I am not getting a signal? wait there it is it says its connected, damn no it was only a fleeting moment of google passing us by.

I know, I’ll ring a friend, catch up on the gossip, see how things are, I dial the number, no ring tone, I must have dialled the wrong number?, so I redial, no signal,I probably did the same again, silly me!. Now I definitely dialled the right number, aah there we go, its ringing” Hello”...”hello Paul its me, how are you?”...”hello?” the voice at the other end says.
“Hello?”…” Can you hear me?”…..”Who’s there?”...” What’s that echo on the phone?” He asks….. You sound so far away! Are you abroad? He asks.
No it’s me on my new magnet phone. I’m only 3 miles away but it sounds like I am phoning from a third world country, its great its like being on a video phone link from Afghanistan, feel like Charlie Bird reporting from a war zone.

The above may seem like fiction, but it’s just a typical day in our household. I decided in order to save some money I would install Magnet networks. There would be one provider for broadband, TV and digital TV, all in one package. It would mean I would lose my number, but hey we all make sacrifices, (and mistakes).

They signed me up in October, it would be 6 weeks approx before installation, I rang the end of November, it was delayed a further 4 weeks, but would be in for Christmas, again I rang
Mid- December, no sorry, it’s going to be January now.

January arrived, they installed one stb boxes, (I had ordered two), and we plugged it in, bad pixilation? It would settle soon. At least I have broadband, tried to get a signal on my laptop, it wouldn’t find the wireless router, so I rang the tech team.
“It sounds like the wireless card is not compatible with the router” I was informed,” but its working fine with my old router from Eircom” I replied.
So I went out and bought a new wireless card for my laptop (60 euro).Bingo it linked up so I applied and saved my settings. Now it switches off approx every two hours and tries to link up with somebody’s 3-com router?
I keep ringing and e-mailing and telling them of my problems and they keep saying turn off and on your modem and we will do a line test which usually sorts this problem out, latest is that the lines are old copper lines and they are petitioning eircom to replace them?.
All I can say is I despair at the whole situation and feel very aggrieved with the lack of attention this problem is receiving.
I was planning on cancelling my NTL service but I will be cancelling Magnet instead.
I find the whole experience amateurish and reminiscent of the old post and telegraphs ethos of the 60’s Ireland. My patience is wearing thin and is finite. I would have more respect if Magnet told me that they are having problems and hope to have them sorted soon, but no one seems to want to keep the customer informed.
