Default Nova or Eircom/BT?

Daddy or Chips?

Buying in Carrigaline after living in, well Carrigaline and need broadband. After reading the previous thread (and poor Dave running for the hills after being inundated with attacks from all corners) I'm a bit hesitant.

Thinking about Nova because I need decent upload for photos. That and I don't want to drop 25 quid a month for a phone line I'll make a voice call on maybe twice a month. So Nova and maybe blueface or Skype or something like that.

What's the service like in Carrigaline these days? If I went for the 1mb package, would I get a decent service to run a voip phone and still get a fair share of internet speed? I'm not attacking or doubting the service, I just need some facts. I normally prefer to deal with smaller companies than the Eircom's and BT's of this world as you tend to get better service, especially if the company is local. They always seem to be aware that you could turn up at their doorstep within the hour and bring whatever rants and raves you have to them in person rather than screaming down the phone.

Anyway, I'd like to hear from anyone. Customers in Carrigaline, Nova themselves or anyone that has an opinion on the whole sha-bang. Cheers

Default Nova broadband in Carrigaline

Hi Rymus,

Dave here firmly back on the ground! I remember back then last year with the network problems in Carrigaline - pretty stressful times alright for all concerned! Well we got things sorted out there and thankfully things are nice and stable now. We have more capacity and latencies are gone down, so there should be no problems with VOIP. I would like to hear from anyone down there about their experiences for 2007 so far.

Of course, we also monitor the latency and uptime ourselves and I have no problems being open with people about this.

This is our NOC latency graph for Carrigaline for the last month:

As you can see it is about 13ms average from the fibre node - about 10ms off-peak going up to about 18ms average at peak-time. Add about 9ms over the fibre to the internet. These are round-trip times and also you should be looking at the green line, forget about the grey.

So no problems there for VOIP.

Dave

Fair play dave its good to see an isp rep actually taking an interest in the problems of its users in a active way on the boards. It is just a pity more isp's dont have your level of interest in QOS but one of these days hopefully we can all enjoy BB without all the useless useless providers ruining it for everyone
