Default Happy with NTL shocker!!

Hi all, this is my first post here and concerns my recently installed NTL Ultra 6Mb broadband.
Some background - moved out of home for 6-9 months cos of building works and moved to rented apartment in donnybrook. Had esatbt internet at home without too many difficulties.....problems with eircom over transferring phone in new place..... bought an 02 mobile broadband device - absolutely appalling, total waste of money, download speeds in region of 50kbs... avoid at all costs!!!!

Hate dealing with NTL as their customer service is appalling but decided to try their 6Mb broadband out of desperation.
Result: excellent!!! I'm pretty stunned to be honest, constant download speeds of 5.89Mb/s on speed test here, no matter time of day or night, and upload speeds of around 522kb/s. Also got similar download speeds on laptop through my wireless router.
I've only had it for 2 weeks so maybe this is a honeymoon period but I just thought I'd post to give credit where its due.

Having been a part of their Customer service I know your frustration, The 'system' is not very good. Very stressful place to work as we do the best we can then other depts/people let us down and we take the flak from the customers who then think we did nothing even though we tried our best. sigh

Anyway I have the 6mb package too and my DL has ever dropped under 5m or my UL under 500kp except once or twice in the last 2 years due to an area problem or whatever. Not everyone is as lucky though

now that is a shocker! I usually find that my speeds are crap in the evenings & weekends and fine during the day on weekdays for whatever reason. downloaded a 700meg file there last sunday and it took nearly two hours, rubbish huh, checked my speed on the speed test and it was around 300kps, around the same now this evening yet this morning (wed) it was 5.8megs (as close to 6megs as I get), it's a funny old NTL service! I wonder if people using their cable affects the speed???
No point in giving the poor sods on the cust service desk grief, ask to be put straight through to Retentions, they seem to have the power and can give you credits for poor service.

later

Chances are you're in a heavily subscribed area of NTL's network and so at busy times (evenings and weekends when everyone is at home) when everybody's logging on you're all fighting for the same bandwidth, resulting in everyone getting poor speeds.

Dont be happy too early.
Been with NTL now for almost 3 years of which the first 22 months were as you described.
Then.... december 2006 hell broke loose and i have been dealing with the muppets they call customer support for 11 months now. Recently it has been ok but i am not holding my breath that it will stay this way.

And i only took their crap for 11 months as i had no other oprion tbh.

The O2 bb and similar can be good, it just depends on what you are using it for. Stay away from any wireless system if it is gaming you are taking bb for.
but for normal browsing, emailing, chatting and the occasional download the o2 works fine. I do like the mobility of the o2 bb. No hassle when you move houses etc.
