Default NTL Speed

Hi All,

not sure if anyone has been tracking their NTL broadband speeds, but having measured them consistently over the last two weeks I can confirm that their 12Mb broadband package is currently running a DL speed of on average 17Mb, and an average of 1.3Mb UL.

That is in Waterford anyway, not sure about rest of the country.

Default NTL Speed

Hi samurai,

I have only ever been on NTL and the service two years ago had it's issues, however, i have played a couple of online games at 10Mb and they were pretty ok.

I believe Ripwave was wireless, whereas NTL is cable, so you should not see the same signal issues, and on that basis it should be a better service. I may be corrected, but in my experience, having investigated options in terms of moving from NTL, I have stayed as I believe their service to be the best value for money option available.

Default Just upgraded to 20MB

Just upgraded to 20MB...
In an effort to check my speed I went to several site, all of which reported different download speeds ranging form 5 to 19MB...
Speed test statistics
---------------------
Download speed: 10704888 bps
Upload speed: 907264 bps
Quality of service: 85 %
Download test type: socket
Upload test type: socket
Maximum download pause: 74 ms
Average download pause: 3 ms
Minimum round trip time to server: 60 ms
Average round trip time to server: 64 ms

VoIP test statistics
--------------------
Jitter: you --> server: 7.0 ms
Jitter: server --> you: off
Packet loss: you --> server: 0.0 %
Packet loss: server --> you: off
Packet discards: 0.0 %
Packets out of order: 0.0 %
Number of supported VoIP lines: 15
Estimated MOS score: 3.9

Other sites range from 6 to 10MB...
If I use speedtest.net I get around 18-19MB (consistently)...

Now the questions is... which is giving the correct results?
Mike

Default Results

Your results point to a 1MB line with 512kb upload... and that's my point...

The results depend on 1) the test site you use and 2 ) the time of day (to a lesser extent)...

Try the other test site I posted in my first post and you will get a different result... I am convinced the other site gives a more realistic result...

A second, and more accurate method to determine download speed is to download a file from a fast server...
For example, you can download most Linux distros form Irish mirrors, so find a distro that gives you the options to download from an Irish mirror and download the file... (you can cancel the download after about thirty seconds, once you record the download speed)...

In my case I downloaded Ubunto form an Irish mirror and it downloaded at over 2MB a second... This equates to a 20MB line...

A rule of thumb...
1MB line, gives a actual download speed of 100kbs
2MB line, gives a actual download speed of 200kbs
10MB line, gives actual download speed of 1,000.000 (1 Meg/second)
20 MB line, gives actual download speed of 2,000,000 (2 Meg/second)

100,000 bits per second for each 1MB of bandwidth...

So my 2MB download speed equates to a 20MB bandwidth...

Default Thanks Michaelo

Cheers mate,

I got 3MB on speedtest.net, it's funny that i got a letter off NTL asking if i want to upgrade to 10MB or 20MB when i already pay for the 20MB that's why i ran the test in the first place. i will have to give them a ring to see what they think there giving me.

Thanks again

Exclamation my ntl 20 Mbit

Hi folks,

Since i bought this broadband i got huge ping jumps during the day 40 - 320 , on the night it gets quiet but ping still is changing but in smaller way. 40-120

I called the up few times and i managed to locate the fault. It is between my machine and the Default Gateway.

This is my ping to the gateway :

Notice that if you ping your gateway ping shouldnt be more than 10 ms.
You can find the adress of your Defeult Gateway by ipconfig /all command from the command line.

This is the traceroute :

Śledzenie zakończone.

As you can see from the traceroute, lag is indicated on almost every hop.

Could anyone who uses ntl do the traceroute for comparission?

oh almost forgot about the speedtest.net thumb

yes its definitely worth it , alot of users got great speeds but u must remember to have a decent machine.

Yesterday i discovered that my machine is too slow for 20 mbit from ntl

friend of mine got a new laptop and he got 10 mbits of download via wi-fi on my broadband

im connected via cable and got quite old machine but that doesnt say why i got those ping changes anyway....

one more thing

when the ntl folks will come to start the service for you - dont let them out untill they will show you on the speedtest.net 20 mbits of download

thats my advice
