I've been having terrible problems over the past few days, getting speeds of >200kb/s. I rang ntl and they said everyone else in the area is having the same problems because there are so many connections in the area:S They said it would take about a month to fix the problems, meanwhile I'm running at speeds that sometimes reach as low as the dial-up range. Also, the last time I checked no other service was available where I live. Is anyone else having similar problems?..I'm quite pissed off....
I am living in tyrrelstown and in the last week my NTL connection has gone haywire. I am getting faster uploads than downloads. I hope they fix it soon. It always seems to be the same. Sell the product like mad but dont invest in the infrastucture. I will be switching as soon as there is some competion in the market. I am supposed to have 3mbit connection but the fastest I can get is 81kbs/sec.
Ran the test yesterday for the first time. Results over an hours testing ranged from as low as 1.5mbps down to 150 kbps up.
Today, best score 2.87mbps download, 306kbps upload.
I intend documenting over the next 2 weeks, saving test results and challenging NTL with the data. Though from the other threads on this site, I see that no one has hit the magic 6mbps, and a great many people who have signed up for this deal havent even crossed the 3mbps threshold. I have the digi tv/ broadband combo deal, contract for 1 year. The variation at the low end of the scale plays havoc with my VOIP, calls terminating after a few secs on a regular basis. Having tested all the equpiment and talked with my service provider about their server, I can only conclude the bip bip stop start nature of the calls is due to narrow bandwidth. This is the opinion of an engineer who spent the day here yesterday running tests. Still, I will continue to collect data before considering an alternative. What do we have in Tyrrelstown? any feedback on IBB or Clearwire?
cheers
I'm also very disappointed with the performance of my cable broadband service , which should be 6mb but the highest score I have got is 1.9 mb : my average download is only 1.05 mb , and it is often as low as 130 kb . In contrast my upload speed is a constant 493 kb average. Chorus is the provider here in Cork but Chorus and NTL are actually the one company now and they seem to have inherited Chorus's bad customer service reputation that resulted in them (Chorus) being sold to NTL for €1, yes one euro. My broadband from Imagine which I have yet to cancel reads a fairly steady 1.75 mb download and 220 kb upload. Where's the Regulator when you need them?
Interesting, I wanted to research the NTL 6Mb BB offering, but I can see there is a lot of hot air involved in their sales pitch - it looks like they have a massive Contention ratio - probably something like 100:1 or something. I will ask for the fun of it, cos I dont see contention ratios listed on their website.
Personally I am with ESAT BT 3 Mbit in Clonee area... as long as you dont want to use the internet between 6pm and 10pm, you'll get about 2.6 Mbit down and 300 Kb Up... fairly consistent, which isnt too bad... just dont use it between 6 and 10pm... Contention ratio cited as 40:1 and probably maxed out during these times.
2 months later and I rarely get speeds of over 125kbps..its actually getting worse. I have a friend living a five minute walk away from me who's supposed to be on the 6MB connection and he has reached just under 6MB in the last month, but it usually runs around 4MB...I'm not sure if its just my connection or a general problem...someone from ntl is getting an earful tomorrow...
Well, its been almost 7 months now, and today I checked the speed , and got 51kbps. I really can't wait until I can get some other broadband here, I think BT and UTV are becoming available in the next week or so(or so I've been told)
I've spent what must be a few days at this stage treying to get ntl to fix this problem, and not once have they returned a call.I did see 3 workmen at the end of my road about 2 months ago, but none could offer me a stright answer, except something was broken and they where going to fix it. They didn't. I think they managed to make it worse.
If anybody is thinking of getting ntl, I would advise against it. They have customer relations I thought impossible, and giving me dial-up speeds while I pay for a 3mb connection. Don't do it.
Hi kearnsey, sorry to hear youre continuing to have problems on the NTL front... Is it only at specific times? Did you ever try it at around noon mid week... ESAT BT 3MB is actually not bad until about 5.30 pm until around 8 or 9pm... i.e. peak hours when people come home from work. Other than that, quite happy with their service and they will talk to you on the phone, although the operators are not always knowledgeable. I think its a well known fact at this stage that NTL customer service, is... um... pretty much not existent...
You know... you could always move over here to Clonee Sure its only up the road. On the move over switch to Esat BT, I dont mind sharing the contention ration with the Clonee exchange.
Having problems since end of last year with NTL. For 3 months i have been trying to get things solved via their "customer service". I gave up, stopped the direct debit which was due end of march. Pretty soon i ll expect their reminders for paying.
I will not spend a single cent on those ****wits anymore.
For 22 moths NTL BB has been working like a charm for me but i guess they just dont know their limitations of their infrastructure and keep connecting people.
They will probably disconnect me at 1 point and start wanting their modem and ntl tv box back.
I will just promise them a call back around that time.
It just dont have any words for the way they treat their customers, customers who are ripped off by their prices in the first place.
