Default 6mb on NTL? I don't think so...

Hi,

I've registered for 6mb NTL broadband. However, I've run a speedtest which suggests that they've only set me up with 1mb speed. I've run a test on ZDNet Bandwidth Speed Test that returned a line speed of 1243.9 Kbps. Surely it should be higher than this? I understand that with a 6mb connection I may not get 6000kbps but surely I should get more than 1243.9 Kbps?

I also checked on Irishisptest.com and returned a download speed of 1.19 mbps and 218 kbps. This doesn't look like a 6mb connection to me.

Any help appreciated.

Out of curiosity what region are you in?

I have the same prob, (except not 6mb). Ya you really should be getting at least 3 times what you are getting now. The only step is to start ringing them up and eventually they will send out an engineer. They put in a device called something like a 'seperator', that may possibly not fix it. It apparently maintains a more stable connection and gives you the speeds you should have.

If you want more advice- If you havent signed a contract thats more then 3 months then cancel the NTL subscription. I switched to them nearly a month ago and after many phone calls and getting no where, im cancelling and switching ISP

Make sure you have ADSL microfilters fitted on all your phone outlets and don't forget your Sky digibox if you have one. I had a somewhat similar problem with BT's 3 Mbps service and this cured it. If enough filters are not to hand just disconnect all except the input to the ADSL modem for test purposes and see if it makes any difference.

I'm in Dublin 8. I would prefer to stick with NTL if I can, as it means I don't need a phone line (with Blueface, etc).

I'm using a Belkin wireless router if that makes a difference.

I'm with NTL (cable), so phone outlets and ADSL microfilter don't apply.
