Hi Ham,
I have recently used the much malinged Three 3G card - the one for €20 a month in the galway city area.
I was able to get a signal all around the city but I am also using the Linksys WRT54G3G router.
The card I have is the PCMCIA one because of the router and because you can put an external aerial on it.
I only have the small aerial from the three store but most places I can get coverage.

Coverage maps are on the mobile supplier sites.

I used the Vodafone card previously - although more expensive you were guaranteed more coverage but mostly on the slower GSM network.

With the three card you will only have access to 3G and only in the 3G areas.

Well if you are using it for mobile broadband then it should be ok with or without the aerial.
I have broadband at home and only use the three card when i am on the road so I dont mind the speed etc.
You will get coverage using just the card or the usb thing but it is a radio device and if you use it inside a metal box (a car) then your signal will be lower also if you use it inside your home then the signal will be lower.

You should check the coverage of each card that is available
O2, Vodafone and Three
If you are in Galway city then all should be ok but if you are in an outlying area then you may need to get an aerial
The aerial i got was free from the Three guy and I use it on the card - stick the aerial outside the car/van/camper and use the router for local wireless..

or check out that vodafone "phone as modem" offer if your after moderate usage? €15 a month for 25MB sounds great even at vodafone 1.4mbps speeds and presumably they have most of the country even Galway covered and your 1st 20mb/month is free. all you need is vodafone 3G phone with usb cable
