Default where is a link for last mile dont know them

Lots of people can and do use a standard WiFi antenna to send signal 1 or more miles
Example friend of mine working for north side industrial computer outfit put the companies WiFi antenna on the roof and and at his house nearly 2miles away in whitehall he surfed the net from his home using a good quality type WiFi equipment antenna placed in roof of house
line of sight is manditory
trees serious rain affects 2.4mghz WiFi most but affects 5ghz less unlicenced public freqencies and has less affect on 900mgz and or 3.5ghz licenced frequencies

You need to know what frequency they use
If its 2.4ghz you can probably source the stuff and rig it yourself and mayby save some spondulicks

Last Mile musn't have a very big advertising budget! I just had a look at their website and discovered that they have been live in my area (Mullingar) since March! I get the local papers pretty regularly and have never seen an ad! They could do with getting themselves a good Marketing Manager....

Default lastmile

Been operating for a couple of years in the midlands. Regional broadband where Eircom etc won't go.

Had their service for a while..that or dialup. Quality varies and its encrypted so unless you have their receiver box it won't work.

Started off with a 512 service that gave 500. good to start but seems like a serious contention issue as speed are dropping steadily as more users join the masts. Down to about 350 now. If there was an alternative then I'd move tomorrow but out here there isn't.

Been with them for over a year now, initially on the 512/128 now on 1Mb/512 unlimited.

Would agree with the contention issues, during the day 700-800 possible early evening drops to 400-500 (sometimes down to 200 down 80 up) 2am til 6 maxes out at 1000 plus

Trees etc can (and do) effect signal particularly evergreens. But so far I havent experienced this issue myself.

They route out through Packet Exchange in the UK so google etc incorrectly assumes you are in the UK.

9-5 helpdesk is fair enough although you may have to ring a few times. out of hours is non existant. As in there is NO out of hours support. And have a guess when 90% of outages occur?

But allowing for that, haven't had any major issues, uptime has been acceptable, helpdesk has been very helpful when rung, and pretty much does what it says on the tin (barring reduced speeds at busy times).

All that said, as an alternative to dial-up no competition. If you have DSL available, then given their pricing, zero out of hours support and contention ratios (or more properly apparent contention ratios as I can only guess working on perceived speed drops during busy times) take the DSL route.

For the rest of us mere mortals living in areas where eircom hasn't upgraded exchanges or living outside the DSL range, then they are a Godsend and if it wasn't for the like of them I for one certainly wouldn't have access to broadband.

Latmile Pricing

Residential 512k/128k €33.05 ex VAT €81.82 ex VAT 10 GBytes
SOHO 512k/512k €69 ex VAT €81.82 ex VAT 15 GBytes
Business 1M/512k €99 ex VAT €81.82 ex VAT Unlimited
Enterprise 1M/1M €149 ex VAT €81.82 ex VAT Unlimited
Enterprise+ 2M/1M €249 ex VAT €81.82 ex VAT Unlimited

I have also been with LMBB for almost a year now. But lately... well have a look for yourself:

Summary Last 10 Results:
Date Download Speed Upload Speed Qos RTT Maxpause
02/06/2006 00:38 487 kbps (61 KB/s) 135 kbps (17 KB/s) 98 % 75 ms 56 ms
03/05/2006 19:43 142 kbps (18 KB/s) 123 kbps (16 KB/s) 24 % 102 ms 1156 ms
03/05/2006 19:40 233 kbps (30 KB/s) 122 kbps (16 KB/s) 32 % 93 ms 484 ms
18/04/2006 22:32 390 kbps (49 KB/s) 86 kbps (11 KB/s) 78 % 97 ms 650 ms
18/04/2006 22:30 489 kbps (62 KB/s) 130 kbps (17 KB/s) 91 % 82 ms 361 ms
18/04/2006 22:29 423 kbps (53 KB/s) 111 kbps (14 KB/s) 48 % 87 ms 1075 ms
11/04/2006 22:30 112 kbps (14 KB/s) 100 kbps (13 KB/s) 21 % 147 ms 1048 ms
11/04/2006 22:30 112 kbps (14 KB/s) 100 kbps (13 KB/s) 21 % 147 ms 1048 ms
11/04/2006 22:30 112 kbps (14 KB/s) 100 kbps (13 KB/s) 21 % 147 ms 1048 ms
11/04/2006 22:30 112 kbps (14 KB/s) 100 kbps (13 KB/s) 21 % 147 ms 1048 ms
Total Averages:
261 kbps (33 KB/s) 111kbps (14KB/s) 46 % 113 ms 798 ms

And that is only some of it. After several e-mails to them (which only received an automated response) and a few phone calls (to no avail) I am now considering them to be almost as bad as Eircon (almost). Ping times in Online Games have also gone from 50/60 to 130/680. Download speeds has dropped to 7/maybe 11kps at times and tonight is the first time I have ever gotten this sorth of responce from LMBB in the last 3 months: 02/06/2006 00:38 487 kbps (61 KB/s) 135 kbps (17 KB/s) 98 % 75 ms 56 ms. However you are right it is a godsend to anyone one of us that is living in the sticks, when it does work properly.

Whats freaky is it looks like you get better uploads!!!!!!! And i'm supposed to be on 512 up.

Weird

Have asked can this site do a https version

Reason I ask is that if I use https downloads from a newsgroup server I can max out the connection (or at least close enough given the server is in the US)

The same download on http gives me similar to above. So I'm wondering if there is a misconfigured http transparent proxy somewhere upstream.

Default LMBB Upgrade

Hi All,

I've been a Lastmile customer for the last 4 months. There has been a few outages but other than that, no problems on speed or service.

I use the 512/128 but I've been told that the whole network is about to get upgraded. I have only a small amount of info on this but it seems that any customers on the 512/128 will be upgraded at no extra cost to the 1Mb/512 service. What this means for customers on a higher connection speed already, I have no idea.

I do use my connection to game with Xbox Xlink-Kia, a free Xbox live service, and it works well.

In answer to anyone who has LOS issues, it is VERY dependant on true line of sight!

Hope this helps.

Firstly the line of sight is indeed crucial, secondly the contention issues have raised their headd from time to time but Last Mile seem to blame peer-2-peerers for the latency.

I would agree with the assertation that the capacity is becoming the main cause as many other ISPs have a huga number of p2p servers/users.

I have the residential service at the moment and know that they are not charging the connection fee for the month of August and there are rumours beginning to circulate about adjustments in speeds and prices to make them more competitive.

I tried using a 56k modem on my other computer tonight and strange as it may seem it was a lot better for gaming Eg. 56k Modem = 96 Ping in Mohaa which was fairly playable. Last Mile 512 = 158 Ping in Mohaa and not very playable at all. Download times using 56k Modem = (avarage) 5 to 7kbps and on Last Mile = 12 to 15kbps. Oh well, I am just going to dream on and hope things get better before I die of old age

Default Some hard truth about Last Mile

Eircom hold the monopoly over every landline in Ireland and look how they treat us. Last Mile hold the monopoly over most but not everyone who lives in the sticks and can get no other sort of BB. They don’t care if they loose 1 customer they have 100's more lining up. They have been given a grant well in excess of 6 figures to set up their WBBN and they don’t care how good it works just so long as they can say they provide a service. To me €37pm for a crappy, "Might, Might Not Work 1/2meg Wireless connection with no after sales service and no support "(only when it suits them) is Eircom all over again.

I agree. They are truly awful. No response to emails or letters about the low level of service for which we are collectively grossly overcharged.

Mine rarely goes above 200 and is normally around ISDN speed. LM don't give a f*uck.

I got a solicitor to write them a letter last month threatening legal action over the poor service level..guess what..they ignored it.

Come January I'm starting a court action for breach of contract..ie they are promising/advertising something they can't or won't deliver.
