Zone uses a sattelite backlink. You guessed it, around 1300ms latency.
That it's called "broadband" should be against the law - you can barely browse the net on that. Games, most email software, fair few web browsers, ALL VPN clients I have used in the past will not function on that kind of link.
I guess if all you want is... movies... then sure zone might fit the bucket.

The laughable DSL available thanks to Eircom's shoddy cabling can barely be called broadband as it is!

Apologies for the possible repeat, I tried to send this earlier and it didn't happen for some reason.

Let me clarify a couple of things for you.

I was the MD at Ildana and am currently the Chief Technology Officer at Fastnet. I am not the MD at Fastnet. My involvement is technical only.

At Ildana we tried to implement a scheme that would bring broadband to rural areas around the country. To do this using satellite is not trivial, there was a lot to be done and we got it to work quite well. In the process we were beaten by cash-flow. We tried looking for a good investor who would enable us to continue servicing our rural customers. Eventually, we went into liquidation. Even at this stage, I worked with the liquidator to keep the networks up although onsite support was difficult and carried out at my own expense. I accept the criticism that I ran Ildana into the ground, but that does not fit with your other comment that I wasted money.

Although Udaras were very helpful to us, we received no financial incentives or grants from Udaras whatever to implement schemes.

If you have any questions in relation to the operation of the scheme, I will be happy to answer them, either privately or on this forum.
