If you do not rely on broadband Use Callidus/ IFA. If you need it every day as a part of work etc stay well clear. They will let you down and service may be out for a few days. Callidus are a good bunch of guys but I have to say the money side of it which is IFA, must have the worst customer support in the world. The technology used will never provide realiable service. Use permanet if you want a broadband service you rely on, different technology used. Far better.
Callidus/ IFA set up here in the mid Wexford area between Enniscorthy and Gorey, and I can tell you it sucks. Not on most of the time. It is coming from a mast down near Newross via Clonroche, but when IFA took it over they did not do any upgrades to the system, had been lying idle for a long while. From our area the conten ratio must be gone well over 250:1 so that gives you an idea of what to expect.

And as hard as I tried, I could not get an answer from them saying they were going to upgrade.

I am in the new ross area and when BKC communications controlled the broadband I had No problems since the takeover by Callidus the service has gone to being S***E, are there any other wireless broadband providers covering this area as I would seriously consider changing over

axill
Hi axill, yes and there are, just on your doorstep. National Wireless Broadband
Thats the name of the website without the spaces and will get you all the contact info.
2mb Down 512up costing me €35 a month. I see now they are offering the first month free. "I signed up to quickly "
I am also a member still lingering from the BKC times. I am in the south Kilkenny area. Over the past couple of days the connection has been awful. Every 10 minutes the connection grinds to a halt and then comes back again. Impossible to connect to work via VPN over past few days. Not sure if Callidus have done anything to network since they took it over from BK.
We are in Co. Dublin
We have been using Calidus for over two years now.
The initial service was very poor, due possibly to poor infrastructure on the repeater site.
The current service is good ( 1MB/1MB ). There is little down time.
When a problem occurs they do have to be chased.
I have Callidus Broadband thru IFA in Kilkee Co Clare and since installation I have had problems with uploading to my own personal Web Site.
When I had dial up connection I had no problems and have tested my computer on a cable link broadband service in Ennis and no problems uploading to my Web Site.
IFA are not interested and Callidus says that the problem is with my Web software. But the software designer says that the problem is with the broadband.
It works on Dial Up and on Cable link broadband but fails to upload on Wireless Broadband. Does anyone have any ideas ?.
Just wondering if anyone else had a similar problem ?.
I can browse the Web and download Emails no problem - that is if the broadband connection has not dropped out - which happens several times a day.
I have an ECDL Cert in Computers but apart from that URLs and FTTPs are kinda double Dutch to me.
Regards
Jim
I used to upload files to a server, but since I went on Sat wireless broadband I can no longer do it. Don't know the reason either, I have all the settings set correctly. Like you Before I was using ISDN dialup.

Still no response from Callidus about the slow connection and looking at other posts on the net they do not seem very popular at the moment.
Thinking of switching, I am located in south kilkenny. Does anyone know anything about Alphawave Communications, they appear to be one of few options. They have a site Alphawave Communications :: Supplying Broadband to the South East. Let me know if anyone has had dealings with them
Hello,
I am considering signing up for callidus wireless in the Wexford region.
Any comments on the service would be appreciated.
Thanks
Hi,
I have a friend who has been with callidus for the past 14 months. I would not recommend them to my worst enemy. They have more down time than they do supply the service. Their support is awefull. The management head you off with a receptionist who does not return your calls and she does not deal with complaints effectively. My friend is currently going with Regional Broadband and later on when they expand their service, she will go with Irish Broadband.
I am with Irish Broadband and will never change. They have a great backup service and are there in the event of failure, unlike callidus.

I have the same problem, I also had a problem with my emails, there were some email addresses that I could no longet send to, most of them ended in (.com) but some others as well, so I had to fine another email server to use rather than mail1.eircom.net. I use mail.ambamail.com as my outgoing server now. I had no problems with recieving emails using the eircom setting in the pop settings. I also used for a while a free SMPT server that you install on the computer without any problems, exept that it used to take a fair bit longer for my emails to go out.
I have had the callidus "service" now for a couple of months and all I can say is that there has been more ups and downs than the Oakwook rollercoster. Just when your in a panic to send that important email.....the service is down.
FRUSTRATING......a week has not passed troublefree. As for complaints, waste of breath. All you hear is "We are doing an upgrade soon". At first I believed them and gave tham the benefit of the doubt but there is only so many time you can listen to lies. I was even offered a reduction of fee until service improved which didnt happen. After doing a tracert I found an AP at 10.0.1.21 which shows a graph of throughput which at least proves its not my PC every time the service drops. Another big problem I found is that their DNS servers seem to be as unreliable as their connection. I switched to eircoms 159.134.237.6. I know its the oldest server on the planet but its reliable.
Unfortunately it is the same old story for Callidus in Kildare.
I have now experienced both Leinster Broadband and Callidus, and they are both as bad as each other. Stay away from either is my advice.
You are looking at downtime of up to 3 weeks without any connection whatsoever. During this time you will receive little or no feedback on the problem.
Both the companies will constantly lie to you about future upgrades, but it is only a matter of time before you accept the reality that they are not interested in providing a professional service. Their sole objective is to take your money.
Don't believe the posts either about wireless broadband being inherently unreliable. The service can work when run by competent personnel with a willingness to invest and provide a good service.
The cowboys we are stuck with in Kildare won't provide either in a hurry.

You are quite right with regards to wireless broadband, my provider www.nationalwirelessbroadband.com is great, if the slightest problem arrises they will inform you somtimes before you see it yourself, and in the few times that anything happened, it was back in less than an hour.
If you are interested in joining callidus check out all available broadband providers in your area first. we have been with them for over a year and the service is rather tempermental at times. The uploads/download speeds vary greatly from very good to unusable.... like any company they have their technical problems and the whole network is down but that can happen with anyone I suppose.
If they are the only option then it is certainly better than dial up but don't expect perfect broadband.
Because Eircom are not going to roll out broadband support in the Ferns, Co Wexford area in the near future, I too went for the Callidus service. At first I could not maintain a connection, the first bridge unit supplied was faulty. This was replaced with a better unit, still the connection was slower than 56K dial-up. Then the system would not connect at all, for three to four days I had no service at all.
Eventually I managed to get through to the technical support service and they told me that it was an IP conflict that was causing the trouble, some client had setup his own LAN using my IP's for his extra machines. Because of this six IP addresses were blocked.
Since I was given a new pair of IP's and a different gateway I've had no trouble connecting and the up and down load speeds are well up on what I'm paying for, don't think it's good enough for VoIP but for what I need it's good enough.

Any comment's ?
Boy were you lucky, I know people that can't get to their technical support at all here in Ferns. And their service is on and off.
I for one would not touch them with a 40ft pole, National Wireless Broadband is way ahead of these guys, the service has never went down since it started, and I was the first to be connected. callidus have only done some small upgrades to an out of date system.
But I do not see how a LAN settings could interfere with your settings.

It seems you guys are all connected on a wireless LAN network, which is a major security risk. Very unprofessional of Callidus!. Make sure you have a fantastic firewall, preferably a decent hardeware firewall, otherwise other peers on the Calidus network can hack into your computer with ease. I could do it from here in seconds.
The good news for many of us is that Eircom will be launching their WiMax service later on this year, with better coverage and reliablity than a lot of the wireless providers.
For users in Clane: Commsys has done a deal with the Community Council for sectors to be errected on the Abbey tower, despite a lot of protest.
For users in Allenwood: the planning application for the new tower beside the old power plant, with sectors for mobile phone and broadand equipment may hit severe problems. There is a large creche directly opposite the site and initial radiation readings are coming up with a "critical" reading, well up in the red from the existing mast at the front door of the creche. So the chances of expanding the sectors and output powers are small. Existing services on the mast may have to suffer a reduction in power, or may even have to cease totally.

I suppose it is a bit far fetched, that is if everyone who is on the system knows you need to use a router setup as a gateway and it's address setup on let's say the 192.168.?.? series of private addresses. However if our unknowing client, one with barely enough knowlage to setup static addresses on his machines on his home Lan connects that hub or switch directly to the bridge unit supplied by callidus then every machine on that Lan is visable to the network and he has just chosen my address and a third persons address for his other two machines, the system locks up every time he powers up, my system now fails to access the net, the third person's machine lock up and the culprit's system doesn't work either.
The thing is, why are the units not setup as gateways, they have that ability and any I've seen have a dhcp server as well. I know it's another hold up in the system but they would not have to give each client a pair of IP's. Any client who needs their own LAN just sets-up as to automatically obtain IP address in network setup, I think it would make the system more secure and prevent some of the problems.
As it is they are setup as a bridge, does this make them faster, I would love to find out but don't have the opertunity or time to experiment. but it would solve those problems where a client starts experimenting.

Hi Paulclane, thank's for your helpful comments. I do use a router with a hardwre firewall but don't know if it's any good or not, perhaps you could try my system and let me know in a friendly way if you can break my system.
Patience has finally run out with Callidus and I am considering demanding a refund. Problem is do I continue to pay for a crap service or have nothing.
I have a few queries you guys might help with.
When Callidus's engineer installed at my home he used no allignment equiptmentjust good old eyesight. A cable was then run to a POE unit with another to my PC(No other hardware). He than changed the IP address on my PC to the 10.x.x.x range with a 255.255.255.192 mask. My concern is that I can quite happly change the IP address and the connection still works(when it happens to be online). Also I have noticed of late that the connection of seems usable in the morning but during the evening peak time totally worthless. Average of 20% ping loss with return times often peaking to 1500ms.
Please advise if any of this seems strange.
By the way connection was offline this weekend 24th & 25th Mar. I am convinced that they disconnect over the weekend to conserve bandwidth or am I just cinical.
Thanks
