Leinster Broadband aka Kildare Broadband

My Leinster Broadand connection went at about 3pm today, when I was in the middle of some urgently-needed work that required the internet, so I was a bit peeved. It's just back on now, so I'll have to work late to make up for it.

The phone was just going to answer machine, (I've seen how that works. They can hear you leaving a message)

My connection disappeared shortly before 10am yesterday. I am
guessing that the wind damaged one of the towers on the network.

This outage is not all bad news, since it has provided a bit more
information about the dropped packet problem I experience.

In this outage I am still able to ping the gateway IP address,
10.10.137.1.

The red line on the attached plot shows the percentage of dropped
packets for pings to this address.

Since the outage the percentage dropped has been less than 0.1%, which
I consider more than acceptable.

There was a brief period of 20 minutes just before midnight when
everything was being dropped, maybe someone was working on the
problem?

A closer look at the plot shows that the packet dropping didn't
improve until a couple of hours after the network beyond 10.10.137.1
disappeared. (the green trace on my plots indicates whether I am able
to get beyond the gateway -- when it drops to zero it means that I
can't).

I am guessing that the gateway box cannot, in general, handle the
traffic that is being sent through it. When the network went down
some machines routing through that box continued to send packets for a
couple of hours before giving up (or being switched off by their
owners).

What the graphs do show, is that under low load the box is fine.

What Leinster need to do (and what I have been asking them to do for
months) is to monitor the traffic on this box and look at their
monitoring information in conjunction with my packet drop plots. They
would then discover what type of traffic causes problems + could
either take steps to control that traffic, or put a box in place that
can handle it.

Hopefully, all this is academic from my perspective since Callidus are
going to be doing an install for me on Tuesday (although i suspect
that date might slip due to the wind).

I gave up on Leinster Broadband, after waiting nearly a year for a connection despite supplying them with the names of over 60 interested people in the Dunlavin area and its surroundings. (judging from the postings on the forum their after sales is actually worse than their pre sales promises!)
In November I contacted a firm called Zone Broadband ZoneBroadband to see if they could provide a service albeit satellite based in the area.
Two weeks ago they installed the dish and currently I am getting almost 2MB down and about 250K up, although this will most likely drop as the contention rate increases. Whilst probably not up to on-line gaming, its not bad for i-tunes etc, and as I said, installed within a month of asking.
The latency is a factor but not as bad as I thought, and in any event much better than 56k dialup.
Other frustrated broadband wannabees in the Dunlavin area should consider giving them a shout!

just joined to make a point really while i was surfing the web tonight i came across this web site. while looking for a speed test i could,nt believe some of the bad reviews that leinster broadband and other providers was getting and as i have been connected for nearly a year to leinster broadband i found the service to be very good and rarely not working i am not into gameing! while most of you maybe are i cannot fault this service. well done leinster broadband i think i am connected to allen hill if that is any help to anyone regards dave

We need to remember every thing in this country works-------in theory--------in practice forget it. Been round the block with Irish broadband whilst living in Dublin. Same story, couldnt get broadband then IBB came on stream--------yipee. Happy days are here again after years paying for dialup. Problem was the motley crew came out and done the installation. rest you know-------between a service not much better than dailup and the goofs on the support desks it was a nightmare. If it wasnt for a polish guy on there support desk it would have been a give up job. Make a long story short I got ComReg on the job, this is after doing battle on the phone, letters to the MD of IBB etc. What a result---------I was top priority----------crew came out----------poured water out of the coax----------aerial was pointing slightly towards the ground. This crew erected a new aerial and took me off a new fast signal quite close to me--------PERFECT. Listen just go ring ComReg and stop banging your head off the wall. One email from them and your sorted and repeat the procedure with ComReg till your satisified. They got better BB in africa than we have in Ireland, one of the richest countries in the world. Point is this until the whole country goes fibre optic the service we get is rubbish in comparison. I use the mic a lot in chat rooms--------if im downloading my voice breaks up---------even streaming music gets choppy. Problem ---------- we got no grunt----------its that simple--------the bandwidth is simply not there. Forget what your supposed to be getting-------whats the contention ratio and dont forget---------a byte and a bit is --------KB as opposed to Kb----------is two different things. Divide the bits by 8 to get bytes. In america with guys I talk to everyday, even in Britain----------they got grunt compared to us. BT in the UK---------cant afford to go fibre optic till 2012. Theres a very noice pleasant lady in Comreg whos soft voice works wonders. Give her a call. Heres a thought----------all these new powers the Consumer ppl have now-----------ring them and tell them your not getting what your supposed to be getting from your supplier. If we all stopped our direct debits what would happen. How many of us ever got a refund or an apology or even a months credit. I never did.

Kildare Dave,

It is good to hear someone getting a good service from Kildare (aka Leinster) Broadband.

I should say that I their service even with the dropped packets was miles better than dial-up with Eircom -- but still way off what it should be.

I've now switched to Callidus. See attached plot of dropped packets this year -- no prize for guessing what day my link was switched over to Callidus.

Callidus is also dropping more than I would like (VOIP is often not viable), but I have also had times when VOIP has worked very smoothly -- with LB it was impossible.

By the way i asked Quantum B/B to do a site test but the cant get a signal from Bruee hill where i thought Kildare B/B were getting their signal from for Calverstown- very strange? The little i had to with them, they were very efficient -Quantum that is

My LBB connection has been almost unusable for the past three weeks, which causes me severe problems as it my Business broadband. There have been so many times when I have been working away on some important project and half way through the broadband disappears, losing all my work. It has not just be an inconvenience, it actually loses me money, or costs me money. I have been on the phone to them so many times, and they are always very nice, but my connection is still miserable.

See attached jpg, this is the fastest speed in a long time, and that's at 22.30 tonight, I couldn't run the test earlier as my broadband wouldn't work. Notice that my upload speed was too low to be measured

Why dont you check with house near you that have the Leinster B/B connection and see what they are getting

I had crap signal at one stage and they came around and changed some settings and its been fine since then.
Unless you have an option, i would perservire,inother nag till you get satisfaction

Update:

six months on and Leinster Broadband is still a disaster in the evenings.

My advice is to steer well clear of them, or they will break your heart

I presume you are referring to L. Rroadband. i find they have improved a lot except for their comunications, at which they are hopeless, they do not answer calls and do not reply, it could take you a half a day to get someone, and whwn you do, do NOT let go asd they dont ring you back
