Broadband and Speed Issues Hi I'm Paddy and I've been a member for a short while now. During this time I have been reading through all the issues you guys have with your Broadband services and what has become apparent to me is that every Isp has problems. These problems all seem to relate to speed and i have come to the following conclusions
1. Cable suppliers have problems supplying when the cable is sub-standard and can't support broadband. This is an infastructure problem and simply won't be sorted out until the network owners start investing in their networks.
2. p2p, BT, gaming and Voip will cause problems for all on contended connections they simply use up to much bandwidth so if 15 people on a 38:1 contended connection are using p2p and 10 are using voip the service for everyone using that shared connection is crap. If you leave p2p or bt software on your desktop and it is active everytime you switch on your speed will always be crap
3. Wireless Suppliers will always have problems if they don't invest in BANDWIDTH they will never be able to support Voip, gaming and p2p to any great extent with the current bandwidth they use (which is dealt out by comreg) or indeed even if they treble the bandwidth. The pipes are to narrow. speed will always be an issue with these Isp's. If your only using your connection to browse, send emails and purchase (and I use the word purchase) music and live in an area where not many people will be using wireless then wireless is great as long as your not sharing your connection with someone using p2p etc or on a congested transmitter.
If You use wireless (wireless uses timeslots to transmit information) this is the best annalagy I can give you,
Think of the M50 from 10pm to 6am traffic moves smoothly because there's not much on it! from 7am till 9pm nothing moves cause there's too much traffic along comes p2p, BT, Voip and closes 1 lane standstill !! what's more along come too many customers and its 24/7 slowdown!!
Anyway that's my pennies worth!!
