Default New Low With Permanet

Well,
I have been with permanet nearly a year in the Wexford area (Forth Mountian Mast) and after a shaky start the service was very good. However in the last month or so it have gone down hill very fast . I hit a new low this evening

05/06/2007 21:49 21 kbps (3 KB/s) 3 kbps (1 KB/s) 26 % 117 ms 3532 ms

Been speaking with a few neighbours over the last few days and they are having similar issues. However another mate on a different sector on the same mast is fine (he just recently joined them) .

This broadband industry is starting to be a right hit and miss business.

Anyone else here on the forth mountain mast ? is it just our sector?
Cheers
Deege

Default New Low with PermaNet

We are in Cromane, mid-Kerry and our line of sight is Sliabh Mish. I cannot say that at any stage our speed has been much better than narrowband dial-up.

Am monitoring and will be talking to PermaNet soon in the hope of an improvement.

Any truth in the rumour that pigs can fly?

Default Permanet

Hi all,

I just signed up with permanet yesterday. I'm outside Enniscorthy and receiving my signal from white mountain. I was on a wireless broadband from eircom which was consistant, crap - but consistantly so.

I signed up for the 1mb and the results of the speed test are:

Date Download Speed Upload Speed

09/06/2007 07:21 872 kbps (109KB/s) 123 kbps (15 KB/s) 85% 39 ms 463 ms

So far I'm very impressed.

I have a customer using in Killinick and will get feedback from them on the speed.

Hi,

I am a Skytel customer in the Rosslare Strand area, getting my service from the Base Station on the water tower in Rosslare Harbour. I am on the 2-mbit connection (which is really 1Mbit each way). The service was GREAT until the secondary school students finished for the summer. I still get 800k-1Mbit speeds on the speed test but afternoons and evenings are slow slow slow to browse anything on the net. Even my usual sites like eBay and CNN are slow. My stats this morning are:

Date Download Speed Upload Speed Qos RTT Maxpause

09/06/2007 1012 1025 kbps (128KB/s) 876 kbps (110 KB/s) 91% 36 ms 484 ms
07/06/2007 1314 795 kbps (99KB/s) 770 kbps (96 KB/s) 23% 40 ms 795 ms
07/06/2007 1306 870 kbps (109KB/s) 673 kbps (84 KB/s) 74% 37 ms 493 ms
04/06/2007 1858 761 kbps (95KB/s) 932 kbps (116 KB/s) 56% 49 ms 1203 ms
01/06/2007 1026 1039 kbps (130KB/s) 956 kbps (120 KB/s) 95% 46 ms 486 ms

Not sure if its gaming, youtube, or file sharing but this seems to be a plague that will last the summer.. It doesn't seem to be an issue with link speed but rather contention. I suspect users with the other providers will be experiencing similar issues??

They're good speeds Ron. Skytel seem to be a good provider but don't have coverage in my area.

What is "normal"? As some of you may all ready know I'm with SkyTel and "normal" is "less than satisfactory". In a nutshell:

+ 2MBit advertised up/down = 700kbit up/down actual

+ Average ping times of 6-8 seconds are normal to my gateway on the same subnet.

+ I'll never get 2Mbit because of "contention".

At the risk of sounding emotional SkyTel is rapidly heading to be my ex-provider.. Is Permanet any better???

See my post under the SkyTel forum for further info.

Ron

Hi Trevor!

Sounds like Permanet has the same challenges as Skytel.. As I now have the option I think I'm going to switch to the "big dog" on the block.. Eircom.

At least with them I'll have a usable service most any time of the day.

Okay normal service for permanet is normally very good in the wexford
The last test result was as follows:
28/06/2007 20:10 1406 kbps (172 KB/s) 497 kbps (61 KB/s) 80 % 39 ms 299 ms
I pay for 1.5 down and 512k up and as you can see even in the busy evening slot i am getting fairly close to thoses speeds.

I have never noticed any weather related problems , must be using different equipment in kerry or something. As far as i Know the upgrade i mentioned only took place in Wexford due to white mountian going on live and the extra load it caused on Fourth Mountain.
So i am a happy bunny for the moment , just took them 4 weeks to sort out the problem , could have been faster , but hey at least they did sort it

Hi. I'm not very happy with PermaNet at the moment either. Their speeds are just gone bad!!!! I'm on the 2mb down/ 512kbps up. All I get in the evenings and weekends are a fraction of this. Right now I'm 234kbps down and 144kbps up. They had improved for awhile but at the moment..... Is everyone in the N Kerry area like this? I wonder is it to do with video streaming such as Youtube, P2P, etc. ?
