Default Improvements in Permanet service

Since I posted here last year about frequent Permanet disconnects, my service has improved considerably with very infrequent disconnects. So all-in-all I am very happy.

Credit where it is due, thanks Permanet guys!

Paul

Maybe a chat with the guys at permanet will sort it. Have found them to be very good of late, though my last call caused them to see that I was on the wrong package (€120pm one, was paying for a €44pm)

My disconnects have now stopped. Permanet said they found the culprit. They didn't specify exactly what was cusing it but fair play to them for getting it sorted.

Question Actual download speeds?

Hi all
Just discovered the site tonight.
I got permanet installed about a month ago (512 starter) and have had no problems with disconnections or the like. However I've never been able to achieve download speeds greater than 60kbps. I assumed this was because of contention but from reading this thread it seems nobody is this slow. I always had it going into a netgear dg834pn router but bypassed this for testing..still the same. The speed test on the site told me I was getting 446 up and 123 down, but I've never got this in practice. I've included the Arris stats if thats helpful.

60 kilobytes sec on a 512 kilobit line is very good.

Online bandwidth calculator, convert data in byte, MB, GB, KB to bytes, megabyte, kilobyte

Anyone know what routing protocol they use on their modems?

I have A home made router here and I want to extend the service throughout my house. I set up DHCP on the ethernet interface and I can get an IP from DHCP from permanet and route traffic outwards but of course I need to set up a routing protocol that is compatible with permanets to get incoming traffic?

Anyone have any idea how they set things up at all? Surely this is possible anyways?

Lightbulb Permanet needs firewall

Hi, I have read the posts and thought I would mention my experience.
I use a provider who backhauls through permanet.
The IP address is from a permanet router, my node (antenna) then runs dhcp on the private 169.254......... class b address.
I have installed a gateway immediatly behind the antenna linked to a switch for the lan.
The constant attacks detected have proven my choice to be a wise one.
I have used an old pc running the pointclark.net linux release for individual use.
The community edition of their package is well worth downloading.
Its free and so stable, secure, usefull and easy to use.
It protects my lan from attack, it provides all network services I need including the DHCP, NAT, DNS, WEB PROXY, CONTENT FILTERING, BANDWIDTH MANAGEMENT and many more services including IPSEC VPN and PPTP VPN.
The download is an iso file which you just burn to a cd and boot up your old pc with it and install.
It needs very little by way of speed, hard drive size and memory to work but the faster/more it has the better, especially if you use the home folders/network share/web proxy services as these will take space and resources to use.
Oh and make sure the pc your going to use has 2 network adapters at least, one for the WAN(internet) and one for the LAN. You can install more and run subnets from them too.
All things considered it makes a better choice than a desktop software firewall for security and function, also seems better than the alternative hardware(software) firewall/gateway option due to ease of use and function.
Many services available to your network and the software is free.

Just thought I would pass that on to you all.

Happy and secure surfing to all.

Default P.S....Spacemonkey

The 60kbps is probably 60kBps the difference being it is measured in kilobytes where as the speed test shows you the result in kilobits. The kilobits have to be divided by 8 to make them kilobytes.
60kBps on 512 is pretty good as stated.

Any bog standard router, such as a linksys or netgear, should just work with Permanet. Set the Wan interface as DHCP and let it off.

If you want to have an IP accessible from outside to do port forwarding, you will need to get one of their Business packages with a static IP address. The normal Residential package puts you an a private IP which can't be accessed directly from the general internet.

Default Permanet Latency

Hello All

I have been working a lot in UK & Europe recently so have not been using my permanet connection, however for the past 4 weeks I have been working from home, a secret location in the depths of Kerry, and am experiencing a lot of latency with my connection. A good example would be a ping on a server jumping from 35ms to 112ms and then dropping back to 40ms, I would expect this type of activity to stabilise however it does'nt. I have numerous tickets outstanding with Permanet regarding this and am wondering if anyone else has the same or similar problems.

I have smokeping monitoring my Permanet connection near Listowel from a server in Dublin. For the most part the response time is close enough to 40ms, however between 17:00 and 00:00 it gets a bit screwy. It peak at anything up to 120ms with some packet loss.

Again I have the 2mb down 512 up

time 15.05

your download speed is 392kpbs
your upload speed is 461kpbs
Quality of Service 11%
Round Trip Time 90ms
Max Pause 956ms

been like this for the past few days. I'm 6 miles from listowel with direct site to mast.

This isn't broadband and I read on the bbc site that 'true' broadband is no less than 2.5mb and I'm paying e42 a month for this. Any chance Permanet are going to upgrade this soon? like e42 a month for 3mb/4mb bb?

Glad to hear someone else is having issues, I've had poor pings & QOS for the last month or so, keep getting contention as the explanation, if that's the case Im off somewhere else.

Must be the only ISP where contention drops the qulaity of the signal.

sent 3 mails about this to them receieved a reply but like I say, nothing fixed.

For me its not really about the download speed.

Stats from irishisptest.com

05/11/2007 08:59 975 kbps (120 KB/s) 949 kbps (116 KB/s) 78 % 34 ms 459 ms
05/11/2007 08:58 939 kbps (115 KB/s) 977 kbps (120 KB/s) 61 % 38 ms 675 ms
05/11/2007 08:58 969 kbps (119 KB/s) 952 kbps (117 KB/s) 69 % 32 ms 567 ms
04/11/2007 21:34 386 kbps (48 KB/s) 858 kbps (105 KB/s) 55 % 117 ms 542 ms
04/11/2007 194 312 kbps (39 KB/s) 950 kbps (116 KB/s) 47 % 97 ms 664 ms
04/11/2007 194 219 kbps (27 KB/s) 916 kbps (112 KB/s) 72 % 91 ms 625 ms
04/11/2007 193 222 kbps (28 KB/s) 910 kbps (112 KB/s) 74 % 57 ms 692 ms
04/11/2007 09:16 958 kbps (117 KB/s) 909 kbps (111 KB/s) 69 % 30 ms 488 ms
04/11/2007 09:16 846 kbps (104 KB/s) 909 kbps (111 KB/s) 74 % 42 ms 760 ms
04/11/2007 09:15 947 kbps (116 KB/s) 887 kbps (109 KB/s) 87 % 34 ms 467 ms

Its more about the QOS, Ping & Max Pause. This morning ping seems to be fine, QOS is OK (for a long time it was <30%) but max pause is still a bit off. It is possible that max pause is the irishisptest.com of course.

Default Latest news on North Kerry transmitter

Email from them to me.

Knockanore is pretty congested at the moment and
improvements are to be made over the next 2/3 weeks depending on how soon
the equipment arrives.

The same upgrade was applied to our
Slieve Mish mast about 3 weeks ago to relieve contention and has been a
great success.

Please give me an e-mail back at the end of
next week to see if I can provide you with an update.

Thanks
for your e-mails
