ditto...

my download speed for the last few weeks has been lower than the upload...( 390 down/ 480 up on a 2mb connection )

Permanet email said" like all ISP companies contention is a major influence on speeds" ... thats the reason i went for their "BIZ 2mb" as the contention is 25 max...

hopefully the upgrades mentioned will fix the problems....

that been said today was a good day so far.... nearly got 1mb downspeed earlier, upload is always good??? i blame torrents

Torrents aren't the problem at all. Most ordinary people wouldn't even know how to configure ports never mind torrents. Everybody (even my grandmother!) has heard of video streaming sites such as Youtube.

The internet is more than just browsing and email now like in the past and ISPs would want to get their acts together and recognise this trend and have better speeds, contentions to counteract this. Rte, sky and all the major tv networks have video streaming (live news) as well as watching trailers on apple to online gaming on PC/XBOX360 etc. These are all legitamit ways of using your connection. Don't be like everyone else and blame the worlds problems on torrents and P2P. Granted this is going on but I don't think it's the whole problem.

Default Speed problems

Hello, I have previously posted the following in the CLEARWIRE forum and thought it might be of use here too.
Also I mentioned using a linux firewall/gateway on your connection to help but failed to mention the benefits for all if it is used.
The web proxy cache it runs allows almost instant access to previously viewed sited, you can also set it to download and cache "OBJECTS" below a chosen size so if you want website content including video you can adjust the "OBJECT" size accordingly.
If everyone used one the requests over your connection to your ISP's gateway would be tiny in comparison and everyone would benefit from the available bandwidth.
Anyway here is the other post:

Speeds dropping off?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

These companies all use "Traffic shaping", this works like a bucket with a small feed pipe. You will get an initial burst of speed, sometimes upto your limit(if the contention allows), but after a short time the bucket is empty and your now on drip feed, topping up your bucket at a fraction of your limit.
The P2P connection packets are blocked, using "socks to http" with a subscription to a socks server will get you around this.
You could also try using the "TOR" network, but they wont thank you for clogging it with P2P traffic
You should also know that your being monitored ALL THE TIME.
If you don't like the idea try using "privoxy" along with "TOR", just grab the "VIDALIA" bundle, this will encrypt all requests and responses.
Wireless would be fine for gaming and P2P if the companies had the bandwidth, they don't.
With eircom's huge charge for backhaul, and ESB getting greedy for access to their fibre the providers are tightening their belts.
If enough people complain things will change, with loads of subscribers the ISP's will be able to purchase more backhaul, so low cost crappy access is the first step, it HAS to get better.
Cisco have purchased a WIMAX company recently, the big boys are getting behind this technology, this will improve things greatly.
Hope some of this has helped someone.
Best of luck with your future access.

Haven't a clue what your talking about there mate. PermaNet's only problem is Knockanore's mast being overcrowded.

So you have no problems with permanet?
Your in the minority, good luck to you, or maybe your an employee and get special treatment?
"Buckets" are a standard traffic management tool.

Your other posts tell of nothing but problems, have you read the other posts from other areas?
The contention is bad, the traffic is "managed", and do you have P2P access?
If so make the most of it as they are blocking P2P connection packets in other areas.

from the previous posts i thought it was just the north kerry mast as slieve mish was upgraded and it seems to be fine now.

I wasn't aware of traffic shaping with Permanet just bad contention. I'm not an employee either

Hi new here, came here to test my speed for skype. Just to say I'v used four wireless providers here in South Wexford got a good look at fort mountain mast. So I have been a wireless BB user here for about 5-6 yrs.

All I can say Permanet is way the best I'v experienced to date, I'm on a basic 512 connection its all I need up to now. Reliability wise and speed wise I have found them good, most if not all ISP's use traffic shaping over their networks, sometimes the problem could be local uptake or signal trouble.

Chose permanet over skytel cos of horror stories from users (with permanet 16 months) could be different now dont know. My line just passed so I'm looking at wired BB but wary of switching as I'm about 4 miles from the exchange and it can be poor if line is not weatherproof etc. Thinking of a faster wireless connection.

Default "You should also know that your being monitored ALL THE TIME."

Been with Permanet over a year now (North WEX). Could count DCs on one hand (just). Always had the service that I've paid for; 1 Up, 1 Down. No "Bucket" just a pipe. Virtual instant Customer Service. Overall well happy with de Permanet crowd.

Ports allways open. No problems with VPN, VNC or contentious P2P if tested. Blueface VoIP reasonable for the cost.

Only grip the price but then I'ld grip about that what ever it was.

Used to be with BK that turned into Callidus / IFA that now seems to be Omnitel. Had DC issues, speed issues, Support issues, closed Ports etc BUT that was along time ago so all is probably well with ISP now.

Is some one paranoid?

Hi I'm on here tonight cos my connection has been slow at night since I posted above (I'm one of the people they're quoting I think) I'd say its P2P users etc, but not getting what I'm paying for right now anyway we'll see if it improves .... will be back to report on the service again in a while

What id does prove is that this site is a success in so far as it helps people choose between the poor services we do have on offer here and at least some ISP's watch the comments posted here.

I'm really surprised to see comments being taken from here.

Anyways, my d/l speeds have stabilized the last week or so. I'm very happy so far. Getting my 1.4Mbps right now (friday evening 4.40pm), although everyone could be out drinking after work!

Not trying to get on the Permanet's front page or anything but I've been with Permanet for 2 years and in that time I've been happy 99% of the time. I do find them very friendly and helpful. Contention has been their main issue for the past few months and they've had a few teething problems at the start. I'm just wishing now that they might lower their 3mb/4mb packages so we can upgrade. We're paying the same as some British BB customers on 8mb/12mb packages so lets hope 2008 will be good to us

Very good speeds this evening
