Default Upgraded packages from Permanet.

Well I noticed a while ago my package speeds 892/128 had jumped to a much better speeds.

I emailed permanet and was told there would be an announcement shortly,I asked if they could email me when it's been put on the site and got a email this morning..

I'm now on a 2048/512 package! And from the speedtests I've been doing recently it seems I'm getting those speeds, all the time..

I'm delighted now and it seems permanet is now competing with local ASDL providers and I don't think I will change now.My VOIP calls are clear,Youtube videos stream very quick(as do HD) and gaming etc is perfect,The upload speed increase is brilliant (for me,uploading alot of photos to my site etc) as well,I've uploaded 250mb of photos in under an hour!

Looks like we're getting competitive packages and a great service now

what package are you on home or business?

I was on the 2mb Biz package and am now getting 2048/512 which is a home package I think as all the biz packages are 1024 up. I was paying e42 for this and would go for the home express with the 3072 down for the extra e2 but I got the biz that time because of the static IP. Do you think I can get the Home package with a static IP?

yes the new packages are way better now but they do have download caps now so that another thing u need to be aware of. i have signed up to the 4 mb down and 1 mb up package today and i have not got over 2.7 mb yet and it is not working right at all tonight it is cutting out and speeds are as low as dail up at times i got 45 kb on a speedtest a few hours ago. whatever is wrong i am sure they will sort it out tomorow.

You're not f**cking serious? That was one of the most appealing things about permanet over every other services!

That's an utter joke,They give us double the speed's and we can't even use them to their full potential,What a joke!

As it stands on my 2mb package i can download about 666mb,That's around an hour episode of something in HD on youtube probably less,There's three of us using the net here,And an xbox and a voip phone,How do i monitor it all??My router doesn't..

I would say they will lose some potential custom from this,But as it's not on the site how will anyone know?!

It's puzzling why they didn't add the caps onto the site with the new upgraded packages. Why add caps now after so many years uncapped service? I wonder is this true or not? It's hard to get in contact with them directly

In a way I'm not surprised they introduced caps. The service was abused, I remember on several occasions having to deal with dialup speed service because the network was so congested. We even gave up our VoIP line because it was too unreliable. At least with the service being capped this should make things more reliable for everyone; but I do wonder if the caps are a bit too low.

After thinking about it abit i can see the advantages for this,Permanet have worked hard to get a good stable service which for me has only dropped .03-.05 mb maximum,Their customer care has been one to nothing and i'd rather keep it like that,I may be leaving Ireland for a year so i can't see 20gb being a huge issues for my family..

After speaking to customer care the caps havn't yet been confirmed and won't be till there is an announcement on the site,Also i've been told by the end of the year there will be a VOIP service released by permanet,And it operates through seperate bandwidth meaning it will have no affect on on your connection,That gets the thumbs up from me as i use voip at the moment,And other members on the internet can affect the quaility

I don't think it was abused. TBH, if you get broadband you should be able to use it as little or as much as you like. Why not? You are buying/renting a 1mb/2mb/etc. line so if you want to watch youtube 24hours a day, I can't see why you can without affecting everyone else. I hope in the future there will be no such thing as contention ratios (e.g. Smart).

I really do think the caps are a bad idea. It gave Permanet a fantastic advantage over the rest. The caps are WAY TOO LOW. Vodafone mobile broadband is e14.99 a month and has a 10GB Cap, and this is mobile broadband.

Unfortunately I don't think that's possible for most ISPs, especially not a small local provider like Permanet. I don't have any sympathy for heavy downloaders after having to put up with terrible performance for so long; it's not like I had any choice to switch.

Also there's the very grey issue of what 24/7 downloaders are actually downloading, there's only so many "linux distros" out there.

Sure you'll get a higher cap on Vodafone but you'll also get sub-satellite pings and the chances of getting the advertised speed is slim to nil.

LOL Abused much? You must of been very lucky,Many nights early this year I was on 25% of my package speed,And permanet customer care heard about it!On many occasions with numerous speed tests attached!

Mobile broadband is a joke,As Karsini said the ping can be atrocious and the more people who connect the traffic basically gets queued so your pings increase,Also the further away you are from the mast the lower your speed when traffic increase,Unlike permanet who provide a relatively stable package to all their customers 1km from the mast or 10km and also supply a ping thas is suitable for gaming voip etc etc..

There's one easy way to compare it,Hold a Vodafone modem next to the permanet antenna and you'll notice what Vodafone are trying to supply is near impossible.

Yes their service can be good,But look at three,They got huge sales when they released their package, cheaper than vodafone and o2 and now look their service is over used,Terrible for most!

If you feel Vodafone would be better I'd recommend borrowing a dongle(I think you can from 02) and trying voip/gaming etc and I'm sure you'll reconsider,Vodafone isn't broadband it's midband.

Until ASDL reaches us out here in the country permanet is the only real alternative and to be honest I'm going to stay with them,I have no home phone and use VOIP so we pay €45-€50 a month for a 2mb connection and a call package with free UK and Ireland calls to landlines from blueface,Which now can be used all the time,Free UK calls are well used by us and the eircom alternative would be more

I have too noticed the new packages and upgrades. But i am wondering do people get automatically upgraded, or do they have to contact permanet first. As i still seem to be on my original 2mb package, ie getting 1.7 down and 0.25 up.
According to price i am paying on their website, i should be getting the home express package, which is 3 mb down and 0.512 mb up.
Granted these are max speeds available, but i should still expect to get something like 2.5-2.8 mb down>?
