3 Broadband 3G Modem - Extension lead

I have the 3 (three) "broadband" service with a Huawei E220 modem, in Kildare and find it quite good, but signal strength is very variable. I usually have to go upstairs to get a good signal and put in a window.
Question - can I use USB extender leads to connect the modem? I would need a connector about 10m long to go from my upstairs window to my desktop PC downstairs.
I note that manual says E220 needs 2 X USB connections for power, but I use it with a single connection and its OK - but would it need 2 X power leads to go 10m?
