Default Wireless Router ..Dazed & Confused ...

I bought a Linksys Wireless G Broadband Router today and am now pulling the hair out of my head !!

Inserted the start up CD followed all the instructions ... then get a message on my laptop telling me " no internet connection found "....repeated instructions a few times to no avail. Decided to connect back up my BT Broadband DSL line to my laptop before I exploded. After a few cigarettes & when I calmed down decided to have another go. This time I get a message that wireless network connected but yet still no internet connection available although my laptop, modem & router tells me there is a connection !!. To make matters worse my laptop will now not recognise the start up CD in my D drive !!The salesman in the well know shop where I purchased this item told me setting this up was simple ... well not for this 40 something !! I would very much appreciate any guidance ... before I take this back to the shop .. Cheers ...Dazed & Confused ...

Which model number exactly is it?

Is this a router only or does it also have a builtin modem?

you have dsl router or dsl modem only? if is dsl router you have to put your wireless router to act like a access point, remove the dhcp from wireless router and remain only in dsl router and connect from dsl router to wireless router to one of the 4 ports.

Make sure the router works using a lan cable first.
ie. a cable from one of the 4 ports to back of your laptop.

If you manage to get this done, go to the router settings page. This can be accessed
by typing 192.168.1.1 into the web address bar in Internet Explorer or Firefox. If you
get a window asking for a username and password, the default username AND
password is usually "admin".

Now you should be on the router settings page. Click on 'Wireless'. There will be an
option to enable or disable the wireless from here. Click enable.

Unplug the lan cable going from the router to your laptop and try to connect to the
internet. It should be working.

If problems persist, there might be a problem with the wireless card in the laptop.
Make sure the wireless connection is enabled on your laptop also.

Thanks for the advise.
When I get to the password request screen and type in admin nothing happens and my user name and password is requested again ..

Tried a number of times but can't get to the Web Based Utility page.

Both the Router and Wireless Connection on the laptop tell me I am connected ... but I am not connected to the internet.

I think that the default setting for this router is to leave the user name blank and use "admin" for the password.

Gordy is indeed correct, the username can be left blank, its the password that is admin.

I would recommend what mickomania said i.e. connect through the cable first (put in port labelled 1 and check that the light on the front lights up to verify connection).

Type 192.168.1.1 into your browser and the configuration page should open up. This is crucial so keep trying, hold the reset button in for a few seconds as it may clear the configuration. Enter the password.

If this doesn't work ensure that the network card is enabled (device manager), cat5e cable is connected properly (and is not a crossover cable but a straight through to be safe use the one that came with it).

Once this is done, I would recommend resetting the router to factory preset incase something was configured incorrectly.

I have the same router and it was ok to set up but I did find some features acting suspiciously with one of my network cards (but this may be attributed to the card itself). Overall I really like it and would reccomend it. I didn't use the disk.
