I have been using them since last summer and to be honest the service was very bad. Some times I could not connect at all, but most times I was getting 200k, but sometimes as little as 50k. I made many many phone calls and was told there were no problems, eventually they sent someone out who also could not really see a problem, even though on the day he was there I had a connection speed of between 70k and 200k and I am paying for a 1mb connection.
Now here is the strange thing, sine the chap called I have only had one day where the service was out all together and that apparently was a planned outage by the ESB at there office (might have been nice to get an email telling customers this as they knew in advance) I expect you were all without service last Sunday! The other thing is I am constantly hitting my 1mb speed now and only drops at peek hours 6-9pm! Has anyone else noticed a better service lately. Anyway I hope it holds out because when it is good, it is really good, but I am afraid for me when it is bad, it is just unusable!
Thanks
I am using SkyTel and the service has been very patchy up to this. Sometimes 700K, sometimes 7K, sometimes no service at all. I was very unhappy and told them so many times. There was no service last Sunday (11-3-2007). However, this Monday I complained to one of their technical people about Sunday and about the patchy service. Apparently there was a planned outage on Sunday (why didn't they email us to warn us?) but since then the service has been great; never less than 700 K.
I have skytel since late september. Contract was €35 pm plus installation and modem for a 2 mb line at 24:1 contention. On the phone they say I have 14:1. Like Johnw says, when it is good it is very good. Its dear enough but I am out the country and have no choice but to use a wireless ISP. Price has not changed since I started and I do not expect it to. See www, skytel.ie for more info.
Im just informed i will have skytel Broadband installed next week, but reading here im beginning to wonder, The only problem is if i dont take this what are my options? I cant stand dial up, especialy after usuing broad band for so long at my last address!!
Pay up and enjoy. Since posting my last message I have been getting good service. I checked now at http://www.irishisptest.com/runmyspeed.php and got 972K down and 947 upload speed. Unless you are close to DSL you have no option.
Thanks for reply, Boosts my confidence about the service, they did say when speaking with them on phone yesterday that they where testing and upgrading the system all this week and next, This can only be good Right?
If its all thats available at the mo im taking it, By the looks of things there is a lot of upcoming competition so maybe have more of a choice next year!

And get Permanet if you can,. I used to have another, TERRIBLE, wireless provider and stayed with them for over a year. I changed to Permanet about 2 months ago and haven't EVER had a problem with speed or connection. I work from home and use the internet pretty much constantly and honestly, they are great.
p.s I will most likely go home now and have no connection after this praise!!

In my view both these operations _appear_ to be grass-roots outfits. Neither seem to have the same investment behind them that our former state telecoms company does. So, considering that both Permanet and SkyTel are small operations, with limited resources, I think they are both doing pretty good considering the massive resources that Eircom have at their disposal.
I live in Rosslare Strand and need always-on Internet for my home office. Eircom couldn't give me any assurances that their entry level 2Mbit DSL would be "up to speed" at my location even though I'm only a mile from the exchange..
Both Permanet and SkyTel offered me better upload speeds and honest commitment to providing the service. In the end I elected to go with SkyTel as they offered 2Mbit symmetrical service. My recent stats are here:
29/05/2007 1905 1059 kbps (130 KB/s) 943 kbps (116 KB/s) 90 % 54 ms 485 ms
29/05/2007 1409 1215 kbps (149 KB/s) 1090 kbps (133 KB/s) 80 % 40 ms 963 ms
28/05/2007 1911 787 kbps (96 KB/s) 548 kbps (67 KB/s) 32 % 54 ms 787 ms
28/05/2007 1319 706 kbps (87 KB/s) 361 kbps (44 KB/s) 26 % 51 ms 1141 ms
While nowhere near the advertised 2Mbit speeds I wonder if the Permanet 1Mbit service is anywhere near 1Mbit either..
In fairness I have had to be persistent with their tech people to attain these speeds but now that the service is properly installed and running things look pretty good to me. Responsive, adequate bandwidth, and overall very reliable so far.
I,ve been using my 1mb connection from Skytel to play Xbox Live to play games and it's been very good. No lagg whatsoever. One thing I'm a little worried about is how they are billing us. We got an invoice from them saying that they will take out the money for the connection fee and two months(April & May) by direct debit but they actually took out money for April, May, AND June.

When I dealt with Garrett and Trish (who I believe is the accounts person) they were very fair about what I actually had to pay up front. They did, however, ask for a credit card payment for the installation and the first month (June, 07) after giving me a month and a half's allowance for the problems with the aerial unit. I'm expecting my next (and first) direct debit to come in late June for the July fee. They did clearly state to me that payment IS in advance for the service, which I think is fair enough.
Honestly, I think they are pretty fair when it comes to billing; If you have any concerns you should phone them and have a word. I really don't have any reason to think that they are trying to overbill you. Perhaps what they are trying to do is get all DDs up to a particular point to make things saner for themselves??
BTW, for the record, I am not an employee of SkyTel, nor do I have any interest in them or any of their associated companies.
