UTV DSL were one of the best 6 months ago BUT now they have gone completly to the dogs. The speed is bearly that of ISDN. There are hourly DNS outages, and they dont bother to ansew emails or telephones anymore. My Advice STAY AWAY
The Download seems to be acceptable, 2MB is max advertised for my product.
I need to investigate the Upload time to see how that compares.
Included in the package is the UTV Talk which is FREE FREE FREE
This great value... Calls to the Island of Ireland and the Island of the UK are FREE FREE FREE off peak and weekends.
However since last week I've been having difficulty connecting at times.
It has taken up to about 30 minutes at times to connect.
I get this connection issue as well. I use my own router and I have to sit there and press the connect button over and over for about 15 mins before i can connect. It's so bad i'm considering getting out of my contract, but then again I don't think I'll find a better service in Ireland.
Agree with all the bad stuff re UTV, lately it's been the pits!
Been with them since Sept 2003, mostly OK to start with apart from the connection issues mentioned which happened to me a year or so ago. Eventually I got someone who knew what they were talking about (after numerous calls to support, uninstall, re-install etc, timewasting) then the problem went away.
However recently, the same things have been happening, off the air for an hour last week, DNS issues, low speeds etc.
It seems these problems surface when there are significant engineering changes happening and could ultimately be due to work that eircom (and/or others) are doing in the exchanges or on the backbone, sometimes the ISPs don't get visibility of what's happening and therefore flap around when there's a problem.
From reading these threads it would appear that there are numerous problems with all the ISPs at present, which leads me to think that this could be the case.
Therefore it mightn't be down to the individual ISP, though you have to start somewhere and yes it's frustrating.
Pings: Dire. Lucky if they drop below 100ms
Download Speeds: Usually ok, pretty crap right now though (2k/s!)
Customer Service: Dire (apart from Carl on the newsgroup)
Caps: 8GB and they've been "promising" to raise them for ages... awful.
Overall: Probably the worst DSL provider in Ireland at the moment. Avoid.

Please don't encourage them, saw the ad on tv again the other night. It is excrutiatingly bad. Thankfully it is not on the radio anymore, at least on TV the model wasn't too bad looking, which compensated for it's bad content.
I noticed what some of you have been saying regarding UTV's internet services and I would just like to make things nice and clear to you.
UTY don't have their own lines, they rent from eircom. Cost wise, last time I checked UTV is cheaper per month than eircom per month, but UTV charged more when you first sign un.
The other problem with UTV is that when there is a problem you can only call UTV's customer service number. The problem with that is UTV then have to check with eircom so in other words UTV is a middle man.
I only get a download speed of 860kbps yet signed up for ClickSilverPlus. UTV say they don't know why and are checking with Eircom. Does anyone know why this might be happening? UTV say I should be getting 1.6+.
I find UTV speeds very good. Always on with my linksys wireless system. connects instanatly(just about - depends on what rubbish I am running on pc). average 800k+
BUT! I asked to be upgraded to the 2meg speeds. Still no sign of upgrade. But they say it takes a few days (2weeks? and counting).
They say it should kick in at latest 2/3aug 2005.
But really, I find em great.
On that note. A friend of mine about a kilometer up the road(further from exchange) only gets average 500k with eircom.
on that note(part 2) -> does it make sence....say if 500 people are with eircom on the one exchange and only 100 on utv...would utv be faster cause of less people on it? any one know?
ill let yee know about the clicksiler+ service (2 meg downloads) soon as it kicks in.
45 euro(I think for 2meg) eircom are 40 euro for 1 meg? which would you chose?

Presumably, as it's bitstream, it would affect UTV and Eircom customers equally. But in reality, what are the chances that 600 people will be on the one exchange all trying to download at their full 1Mb or 2Mb? Highly unlikely!
have been using utv for over a year with a netgear router. Service went down once rebooted the router and it fixed it.
I've found customer service very good its a 1890 rate whereas with utv its a 1550 premium support number for the cheap broadband package download speeds are always very good tend to get up to 140k file downloads from good sites.
There was a €99 setup charge but you got 4 months free trial at the time as opposed to eircoms 3 months which is €29.99 saved plus a saving of €10 a month rental charge so you would make the setup charge back in 6months and then reap the benefits of the cheaper service.
I have no real complaint about Utv's service - was on a trial and have signed up. In defence of Customer Service I have found them to be very helpful - especially Stewart. My only gripe is that I'm on ClickSilver Plus and speed is never more than 1600 Mbps and often less. Don't suppose it would be any better with Eircom. It's still a bit pricey at €39.99/month.

Do you even know what your talking about? 1600Mbps!!! They don't even get that in south east Asia!!!

Totally agree. My ping is auful the last two months!
Give them a miss Quality of service is chronic !! really bad Only getting 929 Kbps Download and 176 Kbps upload this is on a 3Mb line only one third of what it should be . that with a low contention ratio of 24 - 1 and less that a mile from the exchange. Trying to get away from them at the moment. We may go on about eircom but at least you can get a engineer to you home if you have line quality issues.
