Default Skype Packet Loss

Hi,

I'm on a 2Mb Irish Broadband Breeze connection (fixed aerial on roof). I use SIP soft phone connections using VOIPCheap quite frequently and it works great. I also use MSN Messenger and regularly use this for Video conferencing - works great.

However, when I use Skype, I get a huge amount of packet loss (20-30%) and it makes it completely unusable. This is a great shame because I have a lot of contacts that use it and I can't talk to them.

A suggestion that I have heard is that because Skype is using secure packets that Irish Broadband's hardware might have a problem with it - does that sound like a possiblity?

Any advice on this would be greatly welcomed.

Cheers,

Stephen

Do you get packet loss when you're doing other things? Or is it only when you try to use Skype?

It is only on Skype-Skype calls.

I discovered yesterday that Skype-Out appears to work OK. I was testing the Conference stuff at High Speed Conferencing by Vapps and I can hear the operator very well. I've also tried ringing my mobile's voicemail and I can hear my message clearly and the message I left is also crystal.

I was talking to IIB tech support on this and they suggested that there used to be a problem with connections like Skype because they use secure packets and their hardward used not be able to handle it. However, they said that the equipment had been upgraded recently and had no other useful suggestions.

Cheers,

Stephen
