Question VOIP Speed Test?

Would a VOIP specific test be of interest to people?

As in a test that shows how many channels of voice data you can manage on your existing line etc.,

Default VoIP test

It would be really great to have a VoIP test service.

When scoping this is it possible to include a table for different codecs e.g. G711, G729 etc.?

Thanks.

Default VoIP Test

The different types of codec (there are generally six in most VoIP boxes) use different bandwidth. This ranges from (approx) 10 to 80Kbps so the choice of codec is important depending on the bandwidth available.

I use Blueface whose default codec is G711 and uses the highest bandwidth...but also the best quality. If I get into situations where the bandwidth available to me is restricted e.g at a Wi-Fi hotspot or hotel room then I switch to another provider iConnectHere who use the G729 codec and it consumes approx 30Kbps so is more reliable in these circumstances.

A good source of information is <http://www.dslreports.com/forum/voip>. Search here for a table showing codecs and bandwidth usage...a Google search would probably work just as well.

Default VoIP Bandwidth Calculator

Here is a useful tool to calculate the bandwidth requirements of various codecs.
