I've just taken the plunge, and put in Blueface over an Irish Broadband connection to my home. The ATA is by Linksys (the cheapest one 'cos I wasn't sure!). It's a mad system. Turns everything you know about telephony on its head... even gives you American dial and ringing tones. You can watch your bill live on line on their website. So far, it's been adding nothing but zeros because I have taken an 'unlimited' plan. They have a messaging system which will forward notification of your home phone messages to your laptop by email. You can even retrieve the message as a .wav file.
We have a Dublin number, but you can get a UK local number for free, and a US local number for about €5 a month. A second line one the same connection costs about €5 too. Somebody said that you can bring your ATA to any Internet port and it will behave like it would in your own gaff. Now, I haven't tried it, but how mad is that!
Yes, I would agree that the audio quality of our set-up is 'tinny': it's not as bad as a mobile phone, but it's not as good as a copper pair. It sometimes sounds 'gated', and occasionally, intellegibility is impaired. I strongly suspect that I got what I paid for - the cheapest option on offer. Never mind the quality - feel the price. I can't believe it took me this long to cop on to it. Blueface are a class act. I tried them on the holiday weekend, and the boss answered the phone and solved my problems for me. Our one and only support call.
We realise that we have to put a UPS in the line feeding the Internet kit: if the power fails, you can't report it cos' the power is gone!
Hope this helps.
FYI the ATA is the box that does it all at your end. Cat 5 connects to the internet connection, two RJ-11 sockets on the side allow you to use standard telephones. I believe it stands for Analogue phone adapter.
