Default SIP or IAX adapter?

I have been using voipstunt.com and internetcalls.com softphones for a while and now want to purchase an ATA so I can use a dect phone around the house rather than being tied to the PC. The question is SIP or IAX? I am leaning towards this IAX adapter http://www.x100p.com/products_2.htm Has anyone any opinions on the subject?

Due to the overwhelming avalance of opinion on this topic! I went off and did as much research as I could. Like everything there are pros and cons, but the biggest con with IAX is that, as yet, there is no standard. It also pushes everything through one port.

So in the end I have decided to go with a sip adapter. Settled on the Zoom V5 4 Port Ethernet Modem / VoIP Gateway €105 inc. delivery from www.digidave.ie

It's an all in one device with a dsl modem, 4 port router and voip adapter, so I shouldn't have any conflict problems and the voip gets priority of bandwidth so call quality should never be compromised. No more clutter on the desk either!

Just ordered it this morning so will report on how it works in a few weeks.

BN Forgive me for talking to myself, but here I go again..

First hats off to www.digidave.ie I ordered my Zoom X5v 5585 Modem/Gateway/Router/Firewall over the bank holiday weekend, I got an email confirmation of despatch, including a track and trace no. early afternoon on Tuesday and the package arrived by registered post Wednesday.

Setup of the ADSL modem was straight forward and that was up and running quickly. However when I went to use Windows Messenger for a video chat, the firewall blocked the call. Zoom's user manual is NOT well written and it took some searching in the section on P2P gaming to find a referance to Messenger. But I finally got the problem sorted after about an hour of head scratching.

Setting up the VOIP also proved a little tricky due to a lack of helpful documentation from either Zoom or Voipstunt. Eventually after figuring I should have my user id in both "user id" & "Authorization ID" boxes I got it working!

The result... everyone should have one! One small box so no clutter, absolutely perfect voice quality on calls (I have already made a number of calls in Ireland and to Spain and nobody detected any difference in quality compared to a normal landline) and with voipstunt virtually no cost!

Just to update I am very happy with the Zoom X5v 5585 Modem/Gateway/Router/Firewall. Bar the fact that herself is never off the phone!

One of the inteligent features of the device which you may either love or hate is the fact that it gives priority to voip traffic, so if you are on a slow connection it will severly reduce (or stop) download speeds in order to maintain voice quality. Shouldn't be a problem normally and I have only noticed it once when my connection was at a crawl due to a bad connection at my phone line jack plug.

For anyone looking for a wireless version Zoom now have available the 5590 http://www.zoom.com/graphics/datashe...590_X6_2_2.pdf
