Broadtalk.ie has launched VoIP services for Residential and Business Customers within Ireland. Calls to over 30 worldwide destinations from
€14.99 per month. Business customers receive a free router and broadband phone adapter supporting a voice and fax line with free local numbers. IP phones are available from €60 and free softphone for Windows , MAC and linux can be downloaded from the website.
I've signed up for Smart Telecom's VOIP service and got my 076 number - I've ordered an ATA (Analogue Telephone Adaptor), as their softphone app doesn't work on Mac OS. I'll let you know how it goes when I get to make a call...
Yes, sorry for not mentioning it sooner, the ATA came pre-configured and just required plugging in and an analogue phone connecting to it (I used a Siemens DECT, so I have VOIP all over the house )
Sound quality is fine, call set-up times (time between pressing last digit and hearing ringtone) is a little longer than I'm used to (similar to GSM), but nothing you can't handle.
You get €15 of call credit with the ATA, and €1 with the 076 number itself.
Calls to Irish landlines are cheap enough (around 2c/min), but calls to Irish mobiles are around 18c/min, so I'll stick with using my own mobile for those...
All in all, it's boringly easy to set up, and works fine. It's also great that you can have the same phone number wherever you plug the ATA in (the wife will be using it for her new business, and we can have the work-phone at home, or in her office)
Do you need to signup for other services from Smart to get their VOIP service?
I don't think so, in the signup form, there is a question asking which BB provider yu're using, but it doesn't say anything about Smart, and there is no place to put in your Smart customer number, or other reference. Also you pay by buying credit for your 076 account, so there is no need to have a credit reference (similar to Speakeasy, etc)
Hmmm. We were looking into VOIP for business a few months ago and ran into this problem every single time. They all seem to be setup to deal with home users but seem to have ignored the business market ...

You should ask them about their plans: on their forums ( http://support.076.ie/forums/index.php ) - "Joe" is a Smart Telecom guy and has answered questions about voicemail etc...
PS: I've nothing to do with Smart, I'm just a fairly satisfied customer
