Default Best VOIP Provider?

Over the last few months there seem to have been several new VOIP services launched to serve Irish users, but which one is the best in terms of cost and service?

I'm using SKYPE. Have been for well over a year now. It was especially useful for contacting my son in OZ on his OZ Mobile @16cents/min. Also use it for every call that does not require Touch-Tone Phone responses. I'm very happy with it. As a consequence my landline bill is negligible. I still need the landline for my Broadband (BT) and my monitored alarm

BN it's very much a case of what your focus is when it comes to a voip provider, e.g. my focus is cheap calls to friends and family, mainly landlines in Sweden, Germany, the UK and Ireland. I use VoipStunt at present but will probably change to VoipDiscount when my current credit "time expires" ( because of VoipDiscount's cheaper rates to mobiles) as always www.myvoipprovider.com is a great resource for finding the cheapest provider to your chosen destination (beware though the 1. in the list is always a sponsored link). If VoipDiscount et al are not around for the long term then I would probably use www.globe7.com as they have a broad range of competitive rates.

Hi Guys,

I'm using two VoIP Suppliers at the moment (both at work and home). Freespeech.ie (for 076 number only) and blueface.ie for 01 number and all out going calls.

I've used Skype in the past, BUT it's closed source and don't (easily) play with Askerisk. Being CLOSED source (and owned by eBay) makes it a little hard to "trust" (skype privacy problems - Google Search).

That is my 0.5 cent worth...

Before leaving Ireland in June, I had been using VoipStunt and PoivY. I now live in Spain and I'm still using PoivY. It has the cheaper rates to Irish mobiles - although I've since discovered a Pre-Carrier with EVEN cheaper rates for those calls, (4cents/min after 8pm and 6.7 cents all other times!). Sometimes I get echo on the line and that can be annoying so I redial and that can sometimes result in a better connection, Other than that I use PoivY almost exclusively. Yet having said all that I still monitor other providers rates - just in case!

Just checked JustVoip and sure enough they have pretty good rates but I think that it uses a softphone. It doesn't support SIP and that's where the voice quality comes in and the PC doesn't need to be switched on.

Default Blueface

We had tried Smart's 076 VoIP service, but it was a Beta Service and finally got turned off just before Christmas. Pity, it worked well, but their ISP service is still unbeatable

Since summer '06 we've been using a Blueface Business Package for my wife's home-based business. €359 gets us 12 months free calls to all landline numbers in UK & Irl, two Irish Geo numbers and two 076 numbers, one Geo Fax number with email to fax and fax to email, and the bit she loves the most, voicemail to email (delivered in seconds as a WAV attachment, with the callers CLI in the text of the mail).

Her work involves a lot of calls to the UK, and when she worked for an employer, doing the same work, her (Eircom) desk extension used to generate costs of around €400 a week...
