Default Windows XP managing WiFi

I have been experiencing problems with Intel ProSet Wireless on Dell laptop runni ng XP. It does not seem to be possible to switch off Windows manangement of the built-in Intel wireless card.

Backcground:The intel proset was getting on my nerves one say constantly popping up saying that a new wireless netweork had been detected, so I decided to disable the wireless card. In the pocess I was asked if I wanted to have Windows manage the wireless card - and without thinking I affirmed this option - that was a big mistake! Now when-ever I try to connect to my wireless network at home- I keep getting disconnected - I get an message that Intel proset has been disables as another

any suggestions as to how I can overcome this annoyance? Has anyone out there encountered a similar problem?

Try windows zero configuration.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/870702

It puts control of the wireless into the OS's hand's, and works well for me.

Brian,
The info you provided worked a treat - what I really needed to do was to disable Wireless Zero Configuration. Once I did this the Windows relinquised control of the wireless card and allowed the Intel ProSet Driver to automatically connect. I know this was not exacatly what you had in mind - but you response did point me in the right direction.
Thanks you for your help.
Kind regards
Padraig Hayes.

Ah great to hear that you're on the right road, albeit from an alternative direction!
I know myself how frustrating it can be with wireless connections changing in strength, and pings/transfer rates going up and down etc etc.

(Personally I got sick of wireless and spent the princely sum of €55 to buy a pair HomePlug (home earth wiring turned into a ethernet) adapters and now running at 14mbps - perfectly all the time - just in case you're looking for better connect again in a while )

Yours,
