Why is wireless slowing me down?

I have just upgraded to NTL Max and am getting 5.75mbps...which I'm pretty pleased with. However I only get this when using the cable directly. When i use my Netgear wireless router (supposed to support 50/100mbps and it is secure) I only get average of 2.25mbps. Any ideas on why and how to fix??
