Default Extedning wireless network

Can anyone tell me if it's actually possible to extend my wireless network by adding a second wireless router? I know you can get specific repeaters to do it but it's just that I was given a second router and repeaters seem more expensive than the actual routers. Did a bit of searching on the subject and the general answer seems to be NO but a few aritcles gave me hope and I love a challenge!
Apparently it depends on the router itself and what type of protocols it supports and bridging and access points etc....
Tried setting up the second router with same SSID, different channel (1,3 or 11 supposidly) and set the DHCP pool in a different subnet but doesn't seems to work. Turned off WPA secutiry to simplify things. Any advice?

You can do it if you use one of the alternate firmwares, such as OpenWrt, Sveasoft or DDWrt

What hardware are you using?

CNET CWR-854
CNet USA, WIRELESS-G ROUTER
The router I was given is some sort of Edimax.
I'll google them and see whats comes up.

Cheers.
