What is VOIP?

VOIP is Voice Over Internet Protocol

Instead of using traditional PSTN technologies to transmit voice data ie. phonecalls, the internet is used.

There are a number of different types of VOIP solutions available. The simplest is software based, such as Skype, where you download extra software to your PC and can then make FREE calls to other Skype users. You can also call ordinary phones anywhere in the world from your computer for the price of a local call with SkypeOut. More information is available at: www.skype.com

In Ireland there are a number of providers offering VOIP services to consumers:

Blueface
VoiceIreland
SkyTel

According to recent reports the major ISPs are currently doing trials of VOIP services and will launch them later this year.
